All of my Caye Catcher posts for the past 4 months have detailed the effects of Tropical Storms and Hurricanes on a fragile Belizean Island but, today, we celebrate a new season with an improved Thatch caye! The island is spotless, the beaches are expanded and the new Dive Center is alive and kicking. We’re completing a new Sunset palapa in the next week and will have our overwater Starfish Bar open soon after.
The Great Western Reef is still pristine and our resident water baby (Chico) reports the rare event of swimming with a school of Manta Rays with 12 foot wingspans! Thatch is back, so come join us for all the memorable adventures that belize delivers!
We are also upgrading our Homepage to display both amazing adventure photos and Hi-Def video. Even if you can’t join us in person, feel free to vicariously live the dream thru our Video and Photographic postings on this page.

This summer, Thatch Caye had 3 uninvited guests wreaking havoc on our timetable for upgrades and improvements. 2 Tropical Storms and 1 Hurricane showed up at our doorstep as very demanding guests. We cleaned our lovely Island from top to bottom everytime they checked out and had to make repairs due to their unruly behavior but, I’m thrilled to announce that Thatch Caye Resort is today a spotless Belizean playground with expanded White Sand Beaches, A new Scuba
Center, Sunset palapa over water and soon, our in water Starfish bar with spectacular views of the Maya Mountains to the west and surrounded by caribbean blue waters where you can swim or float your cares away!

On Sunday evening a strong category 1 Hurricane paid us a visit. We made sure that all of our staff departed Thatch Caye 24 hours before landfall to protect and prepare their homes and families. All are safe and have returned to the Island to help with the cleanup and repairs.
Thatch caye has a tall tree line which divides the island into an eastside and westside. Hurricane Richard confined himself to the westside of the caye, leaving the Eastside untouched. Other than a major cleanup of debris, repairs need to be made to our marina and main docking area. We estimate no more than 3 weeks to accomplish these tasks. Outer wall work in water will continue past that deadline but, this will have no effect on the full Thatch Caye Experience for our guests. All of our overnite accommodations, restaurant, bar, Scuba center, and Boardwalk were never touched.
Belizean cayes are very rare and fragile eco systems and we’re anticipating a grand opening celebration with our fortunate guests at a time which seems perfectly appropriate, “Thanksgiving”

Mathew, a large Tropical Storm ,passed thru Belize a few days ago and brought high seas and gusty winds to the Resort. We have some wave guards that need to be straightened and lots of debris that floated in with the storm. We’ll have that cleaned up in a matter of days!
By November 15th, Â our new Starfish Bar will be ready. Placed under a 24 foot thatched Palapa perched over the Caribbean Sea enclosed by seawalls and intended to attract our local fish inhabitants. Swim, Snorkel, or just Float to your hearts content!
The bar area is constructed in the shape of a Starfish with seating for 24 guests. An 8 foot opening in the center of the deck will allow all to see the fish we attract in the crystal clear water by day and under lights by night.
A floating Movie-Video screen is being anchored in the water for Float-In Movies under the Milkyway. Every week, a new release or classic award winner will be featured with a side of Popcorn of course.
This is one of the improvement projects underway on the Caye and I’ll update  progress weekly.
Our Dive Team has acquired an underwater video camera and the singular spectacle of marine Life in belize can be seen in our Caye Catcher section or on our Facebook page as Underwater Minutes. Even if you can’t join us in person beneath the surface, you’ll be able to experience the colors, textures and creatures of all shapes and sizes as we update our Underwater Minutes. More to come……much more!

It seems we update our Caye Catcher Blog everytime a storm passes nearby and Karl, now a hurricane ,passed to the north of Belize a few days ago without a gust at the Resort. That is a blessing because we need another 4 weeks or so to complete four ongoing projects before the ‘Season” begins.
We will open our Starfish Bar under a 24 foot thatched Palapa perched in the middle of a giant outdoor saltwater pool surrounded by seawalls and populated with our local fish inhabitants in early November. Swim, Snorkel, or just Float to your hearts content!
