Recently, I had the pleasure of vacationing at Thatch Caye, a magical island on the Caribbean Ocean off the coast of Belize. Thatch Caye is nothing short of heaven on earth.
It is surrounded by white sand, azure sea and the perfect climate for my tropical vacation. The island is delightfully quaint at 12 acres narrowly aligned over a mile-long mass. I recall a moment of child-like glee at thinking I was on my own version of Gilligan’s Island. Thatch Caye is stunning in terms of mature foliage and a host of private white-sand beaches and well-groomed walkways. The accommodations are extremely comfortable. My casita was nestled over a beach and provided every comfort I needed in this tropical paradise, including a fridge, private deck and roof-top thatch lapa (gazebo) with two hammocks. The staff were extraordinary in terms of service and friendliness and the food was a very pleasant surprise! Three amazing meals each day where nouveau cuisine meets Caribbean pizazz. The watermelon gazpacho and pork tenderloin are to die for.
Activities included snorkelling, kayaking, sailing, and evening hermit crab races. As a scuba diver, I also checked out some of the local hot spots. My guides did not let me down. We saw turtles, huge Spotted Eagle rays, Barracuda, Angel fish, Permit, and Tarpon and Nurse Sharks, along with many other colourful species. This is definitely an ideal destination for scuba enthusiasts.
This magical island paradise seems primarily geared for romantic getaways, quiet retreat, rest and relaxation, and a sense of disconnecting from the world. That said, it is equipped with internet and cell service for those who need to stay connected. And, the Main and Starfish Bars are a great place to ramp up the party. After such a marvellous vacation, I can’t wait for my next trip to Thatch Caye.
