On Sunday evening a strong category 1 Hurricane paid us a visit. We made sure that all of our staff departed Thatch Caye 24 hours before landfall to protect and prepare their homes and families. All are safe and have returned to the Island to help with the cleanup and repairs.
Thatch caye has a tall tree line which divides the island into an eastside and westside. Hurricane Richard confined himself to the westside of the caye, leaving the Eastside untouched. Other than a major cleanup of debris, repairs need to be made to our marina and main docking area. We estimate no more than 3 weeks to accomplish these tasks. Outer wall work in water will continue past that deadline but, this will have no effect on the full Thatch Caye Experience for our guests. All of our overnite accommodations, restaurant, bar, Scuba center, and Boardwalk were never touched.
Belizean cayes are very rare and fragile eco systems and we’re anticipating a grand opening celebration with our fortunate guests at a time which seems perfectly appropriate, “Thanksgiving”
